CHAN CHICH LODGE
ALEX GAMERO'S HOTEL REVIEW

(Alex Gamero is the owner of DiscoveringBelize.com and has lost count of how many hotels and resorts in Belize he's visited.) West of the small town of Orange Walk you'll find vast jungles with a diverse ecology. This area is one of the wildest and most lush jungles in Belize. To get to the lodge you'll embark on long off road drive through Mennonite villages and jungle. However, the easiest and fastest wat to get there is by taking a private puddle jumper (there are no regular scheduled flights to the resort) that will take you a scenic flight to the resort. This resort is located in the central plaza of a small Mayan site called Chan Chich. The small pyramids are mostly overgrown with grass and trees but it still creates a serene atmosphere. It's nestled in a 150,000 acre private forest reserve which borders the 250,000 acre Rio Bravo Conservation Area forest reserve. This jungle lodge is remote in one of the most beautiful and ecologically diverse jungles in Belize. The lodge has it's own guides (who are expert naturalists) to take you to explore the surrounding jungles. There are also about 9 miles of trails that you can explore on your own. The primary attraction here is the wildlife. There are over 350 species of birds, many of which can be see right around the lodge. There is also a very high concentration of wild cats including the jaguar. Bare in mind that the elusive jaguar is hard to spot, however you might be one of the lucky few to see one in the wild. Around the property you'll see wild turkeys and deers as well. Nearby is the Gallon Jug farm where they you'll find an organic coffee plantation, horse ranch and cattle farm. A short drive away is Laguna Seca, Laguna Verde (great for canoing) and the small Mayan village of Sylvester. You can take a day trip to visit the Maya ruins of La Milpa, which are mostly unexcavated but have a high concentration of stellae. Further away you can visit the Maya ruins of Lamanai, nestled on the banks of the New River lagoon, the second largest Maya ruin in Belize. The lodge itself features 12 thatched roofs cabanas with hardwood interiors, wrap around decks and elegant decorations. They also have a 2 bedroom villa complete with air conditioning and living room with a bar. The accomodations are spacious and comfortable with luxurious accents. The main house is where you'll find the restaurant, bar, giftshop, library and reading room. It's a great place to relax and interact with other guests. The lodge also has a screened in pool and jacuzzi surrounded by the jungle. I recommend this lodge for anyone with an interest in nature who enjoy the comforts of a luxury jungle lodge in one of the most remote and pristine jungles in Belize.
