HAMANASI RESORT
ALEX GAMERO'S HOTEL REVIEW

(Alex Gamero is the owner of DiscoveringBelize.com and has lost count of how many hotels and resorts in Belize he's visited.) This resort is located just south of the tiny Garifuna village of Hopkins. It's nestled right on the beach surrounded by lush gardens and coconut trees. The main building houses a lounge area with plush sofas and a pool table, the bar and restaurant. King is the bartender and he's quite a character and also one hell of a bartender. Most of the dining takes places on the wrap around wooden deck overlooking the pool and beach. About once a week the resort hires a local Garifuna dancing and drumming group to play at the lodge which is always a lot of fun. Infront of the main building is the pool surrounded by coconut trees and overlooking the beach. You take a cool swim or lounge on one of the beach chairs and order a cold drink from the bar. One thing to bare in mind about the beach is that there are rivers nearby that release a lot of silt when it rains, making the beach muddy. I've seen the beaches here when they are clean and muddy and it's a big difference. To the left of the main house you'll find a 2 story building which houses the beachfront rooms. The ones on the second floor have vaulted ceilings and great views of the sea overlooking the gardens. On the other side is another 2 story building which house the beachfront deluxe suites, including the honeymoon suite. Towards the back, nestled in a litoral forest, you'll find the treehouses which are spaxious rooms with vaulted ceilings set on tall stilts. They also have wrap around wooden decks with lounge chairs and hammocks. The interior design of the rooms is very tasteful with terracota tiles on the floors, colorful mexican tiles in the bathroom, rich wood interiors, warm colors and local art. Overall this is a small intimate resort with great service. I recommend this resort for those who enjoy adventure (the diving is great and there are also very good jungle tours) and for those who really want to get away from it all in a secluded natural setting.
