(Alex Gamero is the owner of DiscoveringBelize.com and has lost count of how many hotels and resorts in Belize he's visited.) This resort is located in the heart of the Mountain Pine Ridge Forests Reserve, where pine forests blanket the Maya Mountains lined by river valleys and high mountain peaks. This resort is actually part of a 7000 acre private reserve within Pine Ridge. The property is crisscrossed by an extensive trail system leading to several waterfalls and breathaking lookouts across river valleys. One of their most well known waterfalls is Butterfly falls, surrounded by lush jungle with a beautiful pool below where you can swim. The waterfall picture on the homepage of their website is this waterfall. Another one of their waterfalls, Orchid falls, can be reserved for couples. Imagine having a picnic beside your very own waterfall for the day. All the trails and waterfalls are exclusive to guests staying at the resort. The birding around the private reserve is fantastic. You can see the Orange Breasted Falcon, King Vulture, Stygian Owl, Laughing Falcon, Grace's Warbler, Lovely Cotinga, Tody Motmot and many more. They recently starte a breading program for the endangered Orange Breasted Falcon as well. The lodge itself centers around the main house, where you'll find the front desk, a lounge area with a small library and fireplace and the restaurant which serves a variety of great dishes. Beside the main house is the pool and hot tub, a great place to catch a sunset. The cabanas are located around the main house surrounded by lush gardens. Each cabanas has a rich wood interior, warm earth tones and a brick fireplace. I recommend this resort with a keen interest in hiking, birding and waterfalls. Honeymooners or couples looking for a romantic escape can also enjoy a private waterfall for themselves.
