(Alex Gamero is the owner of DiscoveringBelize.com and has lost count of how many hotels and resorts in Belize he's visited.) West of the small town of Orange Walk you'll find vast jungles with a diverse ecology. This area is one of the wildest and most lush jungles in Belize. To get to the lodge you'll take a drive up the Northern Highway and stop at a small toll bridge. You'll then jump on a boat and wind up a scenic river which then opens into the 28 mile long New River lagoon. On the banks of this lagoon you'll find the lodge with it's 20 thatched roof cabanas. They have hardwood interiors complete with a balcony and minibar. Only 2 of the cabanas have air conditioning, however the rest are well ventilated. These are not luxury jungle cabanas, but they are spacious and comfortable. The best cabanas are those with a view of the lagoon. The calm waters of the lagoon often reflect the sky which make for an amazing site during sunrise and sunset. The main house is cozy communal area where guests can interact. The restaurant is on a deck open to the jungle and overlooking the lagoon. Here you'll also find the bar, library and giftshop. the property is basically in the jungle. You'll often see a variety of wildlife fright from your cabana. Howler monkeys and a variety of birds (over 400 species) are often seen in the trees around the property. The lodge has their own guides (who are excellent naturalists) that will take you to explore the surrounding jungle. You can canoe along the lagoon, fish for tarpon and bass, go an airboat safaris in the wetlands, boat up estuaries at night to spot nocturnal wildlife, do some birding, catch and tag crocodiles and much more. The tours available basically concentrate on the ecology and wildlife of the area. The Maya ruins of Lamanai are near the lodge (hence it's name). In fact you can canoe from the lodge to the ruins. This is the second largest Maya ruin in Belize. The view from it's highest temple overlooking the jungle canopy and lagoon is amazing. I recommend this resort for anyone with a keen interest in nature and wildlife.
