Over the years they have established themselves as one of Belize's premier fishing lodges specializing in saltwater fly fishing. The central lagoon of the atoll has over 200 mangrove islands creating vast saltwter flats teeming with permit, bonefish and tarpon. The resort has a non-profit organization, Friends of Turneffe Atoll, which has a gone a long way in preserving the atoll's fisheries. One of their recent accomplishments was pushing for a "Catch and Release" status for bonefish, tarpon and permit, which was recently passed into law. The healthy fisheries in combination with master fishing guides make this one of the few lodges where you have a genuine chance at achieving a Grand Slam: catching a bonefish, tarpon and permit in one day! But the adventures offered at this resort don't end with fishing, they also offer a full service dive shop complete with PADI courses and even nitrox. There are over 70 dive sites only 10 minutes by boat from the resort. The most famous site on the atoll is The Elbow, a large channel that cuts the atoll reef. The 7 night package includes a day trip to dive Lighthouse Reef Atoll, including the famed Blue Hole. This all inclusive package includes 15 dives total. If you're not a diver or angler there is still plenty of adventures to enjoy. They have put together a combination of different activities to form an Adventure Package that includes snorkeling, birding, manatees, dolphins, crocodile tours, kayaking and learning about the history and ecology of this great atoll. Overall, Turneffe Flats Resort is a great base for exploring the many adventures that Turneffe Islands Atoll has to offer. The resort itself is nestled on a white sand beach with wadeable flats and the barrier reef visible from the shoreline. The grounds are beautifully manicured dotted by coconut trees. The Main Lodge is where everyone meets at the end of the day to socialize. It houses the restaurant and bar. It's hardwood floors and warm lighting create the perfect atmosphere for exchanging adventure stories and relaxing. The airconditioned cabanas are right on the beach and feature terracota tiled floors and hardwood furniture. They also have a beautiful 3 bedroom villa which probably has the best view of all the accomodations. Their new Garden Villa is the most luxurious accomodation of the resort with vaulted hardwood ceilings. I recommend this resort for anyone with a taste for adventure, especially if you like saltwater fly fishing.
