JAGUAR PRESERVE & SOUTH WATER CAYE - CULTURE, NATURE & BEACH PACKAGE
8 Days / 7 Nights
This package will take you through lush jungles, tropical islands and coral reefs. It will also introduce you to Maya and Garifuna culture. Your first stop is the Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Preserve, more popularly called the Jaguar Preserve. This park is located just south of the town of Dangriga. It covers 160 square miles of mountains blanketed by jungle and rivers. This forest reserve harbors a healthy wildlife population, with over 300 birds species and of course, jaguars. Sightings of this elusive cat are rare but night hikes offer the best chances at spotting them, as they are nocturnal. At the entrance of the reserve is the Mopan Mayan village of Maya Center which is where you will stay. It will give you an excellent chance to learn about Mayan culture. Just east of the reserve, along the coast, lies the Garifuna village of Hopkins, a proud culture known for their excellent drumming and dancing, which you will get to see during this trip. Just off the coast is the island of South Water Caye which is perched right on top of the barrier reef. There is excellent snorkeling/diving around this island, including jright off of it's sandy beach. It is part of the South Water Caye Marine Reserve with an interesting underwater topography of walls, pinnacles, pillars and ridges which along with the dozens of mangrove islands supports a healthy marine ecosystem. Nearby is Carrie Bow Caye, the base for the Smithsonian Institute of Marine Research, where you can visit and learn about marine biology. Along with the many natural wonders around South Water Caye, this island is also great for relaxing where you can relax on a hammock and enjoy the scenery.
