Photographer's Comments
"This photograph was taken at the Maya ruins of Caracol, located within the lush Chiquibul Forest Reserve. One of the trails leading to the ruins passes through 2 towering Ceiba Trees. These unique trees have a long thich trunk that rises straight up with its branches radiating horizontally at the top. Interstingly the Mayas considered them to be sacred. They believed that they were the bridge between the heavens and underworld. The roots, according to their mythology, penetrated the earth and formed the stalactites in caves. I like this shot because the perspective gives one the impression of reaching for the sky, which is probably how the Mayas saw it." Alex Gamero |
